Focus on the HUI Cyc, Flood & Groundrow rangeAward-winning 200W-1000W cyc/flood range for cyc and back cloths to 20ft high and general area illumination "The design of the Hui Cyc is well thought-through and addresses many of our issues with cyc light strips (such as on-site configuration of rigid, low-profile ground rows, safety glass screens, durable construction, configurable connector panels, and more)." Judge's comment, Eddy Award for 2005 Lighting Product of the Year "The Floods worked a treat and I was very impressed with every aspect of the unit - easy lamp access, color frame access, lack of unwanted light spill, even coverage, intensity. I love to have the intensity of brightness/color and even distribution at my disposal. Even deep colors seemed to fill the cyc from top to bottom - most impressive. I shall certainly be specifying these units in the future." Rick Fisher wins a Tony Award for Billy ElliotNominated for 15 Tony Awards, Billy Elliot The Musical scooped up ten of them including Best Lighting Design of a Musical for renowned lighting designer, Rick Fisher.
Rick Fisher (left) with Scott Church, Selecon Product Manager and Trent Suidgeest (right, a lighting design student from the Western Australian Academy for Performing Arts) outside the Imperial Theatre in New York. Selecon's Pacific 45°-75° Zoomspot fitted with an MSR arc light source and dowser dimming accessory forms part of Rick's design, a simple 'single source' tool which delivers the clarity and incisiveness of an ellipsoidal with a beam wider than a Fresnel or PC. Rick also uses Aureol BeamSpots from Selecon's display range and at times these or the Pacific 45°-75° Zoomspots provide the only lighting on stage. Billy Elliot was originally programmed in the West End using Strand lighting desks. When the show transferred to Australia, Rick Fisher and his programmer, Vic Smerdon, chose to keep the show on the 500 series because of its features and reliability. Last year the show transferred to the Imperial Theater on Broadway and again, the comfort and stability of the consoles came through and now the show with over 150 automated luminaires is running on 2 Strand desks - one as the main desk and one as the back-up. Vari-lite also figured prominently in the show rig according to Rick, "The last show I designed was Jerry Springer: The Opera, which had an unpardonably loud lighting rig and even though it was a completely noisy show, I was aware of this white noise during the quiet moments. We were a few months too soon for the lights we love using - the VL3000 and 2000 range - that have since come out with quieter versions." Those quieter versions have found their way onto the Billy Elliot rig with 10 VL3500Q Spots and eight VL3000Q Washes that Fisher says are the backbone of the show. "They're great units and I love 'em," he admits. "They're bright, they're flexible, and have good color. Their tungsten correction is pretty good and I'm interested in a lot of tungsten-looking light to achieve the gritty look of the show." |
