STRAND LIGHTING INFO CENTRE
STRAND project: The Vancouver Olympic / Paralympic Centre Vancouver This multi-purpose centre is designed to LEED Gold standards. The facility houses both ice surfaces and a 66,000 sf aquatic centre. Bernard & Associates worked with Stantec Engineering to design the pool deck perimeter lighting for the 50 metre lap pool and coloured accent lighting for the leisure pool.Criteria for the 50 metre lap pool was to light the pool deck from the ceiling without light spilling onto the water surface which would interfere with competitive swimmers. In order to meet this requirement along with the LEED standard; the Strand SL ellipsoidal fixture using a ceramic metal halide lamp was chosen. The SL spotlight lenses provide the directional light while its adjustable tri plane shutters provide sharp cutoff at the waters edge. Criteria for the leisure pool was quite the opposite, provide colour and warmth while highlighting some water features. This was accomplished using MC Lights pool fixture, again with a metal halide source. This entertainment fixture redesigned for an overhead swimming pool environment using theatrical gel to provide specific colours on water features or a warmer colour temperature for general illumination of the lazy rivers water surface.
