Bernard & Associates has found our first two online newsletters to be a well read success. One thing about the Lighting Industry in Canada and around the world is that it is always evolving and adapting with the times. It is so hard to keep up with the latest changes that we find lighting professionals rely on publications more and more to keep them up to date and informed. Our newsletter also introduces new technologies by our 11 manufacturers and others as well. Each month of course, we feature one of our manufacturers we represent in a special article that explains their core business and present a new product or two and perhaps a project they have showcased. ESL Lightbulbs Alternative to CFL, LED
ESL is short for Electron Stimulated Luminescence, F 2 Million-Plus U.S. Buildings Are Candidates for Lighting Upgrades This statistic means that there are proportionally as many Canadian buildings that can be made more energy efficient. Designers, Architects, Electricians and Engineers should perhaps take a more proactive approach and seek out these buildings which can benefit from the latest lighting technologies such as those from Echoflex, Functional Devices and Gentec Light Meters Today It has been some time since I purchased a light meter and I had a bit of a surprise when I discovered the variety and abilities of what is in the marketplace today. I own 5 light meters beyond the ones that are in every camera I own. I have 3 small hand meters from years ago, a studio model with Foot Candles and Lux and a multi-purpose unit that measures all but colour temperature. Both are what they refer to as analog. Today, there is still the analog type meters with the needle indicator however most meters today have digital read outs with built-in memories for averaging and precise readings. The professionals that use light meters are photographers, cinemaphotographers, lighting designers, lighting directors, gaffers (in film), camera assistants, museum technicians, scientists, technicians, engineers and researchers and generally anyone who needs to measure the colour, level, consistency or duration of light in a given environment. For the most part, light meters within our scope of this topic (visible light) are categorized in a number of functions: measurement of colour in degrees Kelvin (there are other types of measurement references as well), measurement of light in Foot Candles or Lux (again there are other measurement standards) and duration calculation reference for flash photography when using strobes. Once the measurement of light is acquired, light meters can provide a reference for different types of photographic mediums such as motion pictures, video and still photos or architectural lighting levels providing much needed and often post-adjusted numbers such as FL, FC, EV, LUX and cd/m2, f-stop, shutter speed, etc.. EV is useful for the photographic "zone" system. I.S.O. (once known as A.S.A. as a standard setting of medium sensitivity) is in reality the way an operator of a light meter calibrates the meter to the abilities of the medium in obtaining a pre-existing industry standard. There are many styles of light meters, some resembling geiger counters, others resembling Captain Kirk's communicator. There are very sophisticated light meters fully integrated into high end cameras that do much more with computer technology than just measure and present light or colour levels. Formulas & Calculations for Light Meters There are many meters that do all of these multiple functions. See Vance's list light meter list below and have fun shopping as the numbers of meters in the marketplace is rather extensive. |
