BERNARD & ASSOCIATES    NEWSLETTER #6 - February Issue 2010

Here is the next installment of the Bernard & Associates online newsletter. With many visitors here for the Olympics, work is a little chaotic on the lower mainland. However, I guess we shouldn’t complain as Bernard & Associates has had the privilege of supplying product to 7 of the permanent Olympic venues.  We also did a partial upgrade of the LiteTouch systems in the Pacific Coliseum suites, leaving in place the infrastructure from the LiteTouch system installed in 1984. Upgrade included new wall stations and a central processing unit for programmable events. Wow, that’s backward compatibility.

As of February 1st of this year, Bernard & Associates was appointed the manufacturers’ representative in BC for Altman Lighting’s architectural products.  Needless to say this month we present to you Altman Lighting as our featured manufacturer.

For over fifty years the Altman name has stood true to the theatrical, film and video lighting markets, with a dabble into niche architectural products, sometimes called Architainment.  More recently they have been leading the charge with the use of LED’s in theatrical and Architainment products.  We feel Altman’s products will compliment those manufacturers we already represent and provide a more complete selection of product for your use.

An Altman factory rep will be here March 1 to 4th with March 2 being on Vancouver Island.  So now might be an opportune time to book an appointment.  At Bernard and Associates we represent quality manufacturers and we have the experts you need when you are looking for Lighting Control Specialists.

New York-based Altman Lighting was one of the first entertainment / architectural lighting manufacturers to add solid state luminaires to its product portfolio. The company began producing LED-based fixtures in 1998, not only to deliver benefits such as long lamp life, low heat production and low energy consumption, but also to equip the theatrical community with never-before-possible digital color mixing and dimming. Altman’s LED theatrical lights were among the first to enable a palette of 16.8 million colors to be generated from a single fixture with no gels or dimmers.

Altman's Smart Track System wins both LDI and Lightfair Awards

Altman Architectural’s Smart Track™ Lighting System is an innovative solution for transporting control signals as well as power to individual luminaires. For total flexibility you can choose your protocol. Simply combine the system with a standard analog or DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) architectural control panel; a laptop PC for control of DMX or DALI signals; or a DMX-based theatrical lighting console in order to create, store, and control lighting scenes. When using RDM (Remote Device Management) you can get feedback from the luminaires and you can remotely address each individual unit. With your choice of control, you can create dynamic sequences and preset scenes which can then be stored and played back. The Altman Smart IQ series luminaires retain their identity and programming, even when moved to a new location. Altman Smart Track is easy to layout, install and offers you the opportunity to easily create and activate new lighting scenes time after time, all at a cost effective price. The unique features of Altman’s Smart Track system make it the ideal solution for many applications. The system is suitable for retail stores, museums, churches, restaurants, clubs, and so much more. The range of applications for Altman Smart Track is as varied as the looks the system makes possible.

Keeping your Electrical System Maintained

Periodically you must keep any electrical system maintained in order that the system continues to operate efficiently and without down time. Particular attention must be paid to parts of some systems including relays, breakers, switches, generators, mechanical components, batteries in UPS's, circuitry in such things as regulated voltage units, transformer systems and lighting and HVAC controls and monitoring systems. Most components do not need to be checked monthly or even annually but at certain intervals you may find even the finest components from great manufacturers over time, will operate at a reduced level, overheat, begin to fail or fail altogether. Critical system components need backup parts and a trained technician can swap the defective part out quickly. An electrician or technician familiar with you systems can often repair or replace parts and often all that is required, such as the case of an overheated circuit, is a good cleaning of the switch or breaker. Bernard and Associates have certified technicians for Gentec, Strand Lighting and LiteTouch for your scheduled maintenance that will keep your lighting system trouble free for many years.
