After attending College and then achieving a Diploma of Technology at British Columbia Institute of Technology, Vance went to work at CHEK Television in Victoria B.C. in a number of capacities including film editor, television camera, studio and floor directing. For over 30 years he served as Lighting Supervisor/Director for WIC which then later became Canwest Global. In those 3 decades, many opportunities to experience various forms of media occured including commercial production and music video work in both video and 35mm film, features and made-for-television films and D.O.P. status on various productions including award winning promotions campaigns and many other significant productions. During this period Vance designed four television and production studios and their lighting systems and oversaw the installation and operation of three. He was also instrumental in upgrades of AMX to DMX, recent automation of virtual studios and other smaller studio installations around Vancouver Island. Vance has also enjoyed a side career in web design for business such as mining and e-commerce websites and had photographic projects published over many years. As a full member in the Society of TV Lighting Directors he had the opportunity to tour the BBC studios in London and had the honour of lighting many celebrities including heads of state such as Prime Ministers and the Queen of England, sports figures and movie stars . His favourite lighting accomplishments include several children's television series which involved studio blue screen and location work such as theatres, city streets and the wilderness, The variety of the work involved with lighting is what makes it interesting and this is one reason that Vance says he enjoys the creative aspects of lighting but now with the extra reward of helping the many people he meets with technical support and information. |
